The original Sperti lamps were created during the roaring twenties just after he graduated from the University of Cincinnati. There is a Wikipedia article about Dr. Sperti. <Click Here>
We had a customer say that he had a Sperti Sunlamp when he was in the navy. He said that he was in the navy when boats were made out of wood and men were made from steel.
Actually, George Sperti's original work, while he was an undergrad at the University was the "Ultraviolet "Vitamin D" lamp to irradiate milk to add Vitamin D without changing the flavor was sold to General Foods for US $300,000." It was shortly after that, that he developed his sunlamp. The Vitamin D lamp of today uses fluorescent lamps rather than the specialize arc lamp that Sperti developed.
At the turn of the last century, I mean 1900. Peter Cooper Hewitt did some very early work with Mercury lamps and creating ultraviolet light. It was his work and technology that led George Sperti to create his mercury vapor lamps for Vitamin D and Sunlamps. A brief article about Peter Cooper Hewitt can be found here.
The psoriasis lamp built by Sperti bears the Cooper Hewitt brand name.
